DEPARTMENT STORE SALES IN FEBRUARY 193^
Preliminary r e p o r t
Preliminary f i g u r e s f o r February i n d i c a t e t h a t , as i s usual a t t h i s season,
t h e r e was l i t t l e change i n department s t o r e s a l e s from the preceding month. The
Federal Reserve Board's index, which makes allowance both f o r number of business
days and f o r usual seasonal changes, was fQ i n February on t h e b a s i s of the 19231925 average as 100, compared with 69 i n January and 69 i n December.
In comparison with a year ago, the value of s a l e s f o r February according to
preliminary f i g u r e s was l 6 p e r cent l a r g e r . I n c r e a s e s compared with l a s t year
were r e p o r t e d f o r a l l d i s t r i c t s , the l a r g e s t i n c r e a s e s being i n the Dallas, Atlant a , Chicago and Cleveland d i s t r i c t s . The aggregate f o r the f i r s t two months of
the year was 17 per cent l a r g e r than l a s t y e a r .
