DEPARTMENT STORE SALES IN FEBRUARY, 1933
Preliminary r e p o r t
P r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s on t h e value of department s t o r e s a l e s show a decrease
from January to February of about the estimated seasonal amount. The Federal
Reserve Board 1 s index, which makes allowance both f o r number of business days
and f o r usual seasonal changes, was 59 i n February on t h e b a s i s of t h e 1923-1925
average a s 100, compared with 59 * n January and 62 i n December.
In comparison with a year ago the value of s a l e s f o r February, according to
t h e p r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s , was 25 per cent smaller; when allowance i s made f o r the
f a c t t h a t t h e r e was one l e s s t r a d i n g day t h i s year than l a s t , t h e decrease from
l a s t year i s about 22 per c e n t . The aggregate f o r t h e two months of the year
was 24 per cent s m a l l e r .
