Total s a l e s in May of 543 r e t a i l s t o r e s , which made preliminary r e p o r t s to the Federal reserve system from a l l sections of the country, were 7.3 per cent, l a r g e r than in May, 1925. Weather c o n d i t i o n s were g e n e r a l l y more f a v o r a b l e f o r r e t a i l trade in May than in e a r l i e r months of t h i s year and the increase in s a l e s over the corresponding month of l a s t year was l a r g e r than f o r any previous month of t h i s year except March, the month in which a large; volume of E a s t e r ' trading was done. Increases in s a l e s occurred in a l l Federal reserve d i s t r i c t s except the' Minneapolis d i s t r i c t whore s a l e s were s l i g h t l y s m a l l e r , b u t the most s u b s t a n t i a l improvement was in the Richmond, A t l a n t a , Chicago, and St. Louis FatUral reserve d i s t r i c t s . More than 70 per cent of the t o t a l number of s t o r e s r e p o r t i n g from the country a s a whole showed l a r g e r s a l e s than a year ago. Sales of b..'C mail order houses wore 14.2 per cent l a r g e r than in May, 1925, and s a l e s of f i v e and ten cent chain s t o r e s (5 chains) were 11.5 p e r cont l a r g e r .
