DEPARTMENT STORE SALES IN JANUARY 1935
Preliminary report
Preliminary f i g u r e s on the value of department s t o r e s a l e s show a decrease
from December to January of more than the estimated seasonal amount. The Federal
Reserve Board's index, which makes allowance f o r d i f f e r e n c e s i n the number of b u s i ness days and f o r usual seasonal changes, was ~[2 i n January, on the b a s i s of the
1923-25 average as 100, compared with j6 i n December and 73
November,
In comparison with a year ago, the value of sales f o r January was 4 percent
l a r g e r . The l a r g e s t increases compared with l a s t year i n t o t a l sales f o r the
month were shown in the Cleveland and San Francisco d i s t r i c t s , while a decrease
from a year ago was reported f o r the Boston d i s t r i c t ,
