Retail trade of 615 department and other s t o r e s reporting to the Federal reserve system was 3.6 per cent smaller in July of t h i s year than in July, 1926, owing in p a r t to the f a c t that f i v e Sundays in July of t h i s year r e s u l t e d in one l e s s 'business day than in July, 1926. On the b a s i s of d a i l y averages the value of s a l e s in July of t h i s year f o r the country as a whole was about the same as a year ago. Sales of two mail order houses were 3 per cent l a r g e r than a year ago and those of five-and-ten cent chain s t o r e s (8 chains) were about 7 per cent l a r g o r . Reports by Fodoral reserve d i s t r i c t s indicate that tho extent to which volume of s a l e s i n July of t h i s year was lower than a year ago varied widely i a d i f f e r e n t sections of tho country. In the Cleveland Federal reserve d i s t r i c t s a l e s woro loss than one per cont smaller than in July of 1926, while in tho S t .
