Preliminary report
P r e l i m i n a r y f i g u r e s on t h e value of department s t o r e s a l e s show a c o n s i d e r a b l y smaller i n c r e a s e from February to March than the estimated seasonal amount.
The Federal Reserve Board's index, which tiiakes allowance "both f o r number of b u s i ness days and f o r u s u a l seasonal changes, i n c l u d i n g changes i n t h e date of E a s t e r ,
was 74 i n March on t h e b a s i s of the 1923-1925 average as 100, compared with 79 in.
both January and February;
In comparison with a year ago the value of s a l e s f o r March, according t o the
preliminary f i g u r e s , was 20 per cent s m a l l e r , and when allowance i s made f o r t h e
f a c t that t h e r e was one more t r a d i n g day i n March t h i s year than l a s t , the dec r e a s e from l a s t year i s about 23 per cent*
