BANK DEBITS.

Below is given the ^Federal Reserve Board'r weekly statement c-f debits to indi
vidual account, reported through the Federal Reserve banks by over 150 of the coun
try rs more important clearing houses. Transactions cover the weekly periods ending
Wednesday, September 24 and 17, of the present year, and in case of most of the re
porting centers also the weekly period ending a year earlier, i .e ., September 25,
191S.
"
As compared with the unusually high figures for the week ending September 17,
total debits to individual account reported ty 153 clearing-house conters for the
week under review show a decline of 10-3 per cent. Of the total decrease of over
1 billion dollars, about 4o per cent is accounted for Ty a decrease in the New York
and about 20 per cent ty a decrease in the Chicago Federal Reserve districts. All
the larger cities, except New Orleans and Dallas, report smaller totals than the
week before,
larger than average decreases being shown for Boston, Chicago, Detroit,
St. Louis, Kansas City and San Francisco. Comparative I9 I 8 and 1919 figures, avail
able for lU2 centers, show an increase of about 2.5 billions, or almost 40 per cent,
in the totals for the latest week over corresponding figures of the past year. Over
three-fourths of the increase for the year is shown for New York City.
The statement closes with a recapitulation giving comparative figures ty re
serve districts for 153 centers reporting complete data for the two most recent
weeks, also like figures for the .142 centers for which data are available both for
the past week and the week ending Septomber 25 of last year.
