STATEMENT FOE THE PRESS Released for publication St. 1429 Sunday morning, Sep 0, 13 , 19 20; Federal Reserve Board not earlier Sept, IS, 1920 \ BAM DEBITS Debits to individual account of banks belonging to 154 of the country's more important Clearing House Associations for the week ending September 15 totaled 8, 9^5 millicns, as compared with 7,167 millions for the immediately preceding week, which contained five "business days only , As compared with an average increase of 25-4 per cent in total debits, the New York Clearing House banks show an increase of 26.8 per cent, those at Minneapolis - an increase of about 33 Per cent, and those at Pittsburgh - an increase of over 40 per cent. Some of the increase is apparently due to payments of income and excess profits taxes. Aggregate debits for the corresponding week in 1919 were l4 per cent larger than for the week under review, owing to the larger debits occasioned by tax payments, government operations, and in New York City - also by the heavier dealings on the stock exchange. For the 37 weeks of the present year weekly debits of New York City averaged 4.3 per cent larger than in 1919, while the like average for 147 other cities was nearly 20 per cent larger than last year.
