B A M DEBITS TO DEMAND DEPOSIT ACCOUNTS
Bank debits to demand deposit accounts, except interbank and Government
accounts, as reported by banks in 345 leading centers for the month of September
aggregated $148 billion. During the past three months debits amounted to $431
billion or 8.8 per cent above the total reported for the corresponding period a
year ago. At banks in New York City there was an increase of 6.9 per cent compared
with the corresponding three-months period a year ago; at 6 other centers the
increase was 12.5 per cent; and at all other centers it was 8.7 per cent.
Preliminary estimates of the annual rates of turnover of demand deposits
in September are 40.2 at New York City, 25.1 at the 6 other centers, and 19*3 at
all other centers.
