Below is given the Fe.deral Reserve Board's regular weekly statement of total
debits to deposit account, reported through the Federal Reserve banks by about 150
of the country1s more icpojrtant clearing houses. Transactions cover the weekly
periods ending Wednesday April .23 and April 39.
Aggregate debits to individual a-f.count were about 7 P®r cent larger than the
week before, the gains reported by the New York and Chicago banks more than ac
counting for the total increase of about 474 millions shown. Exceptionally heavy
ttading in the New York stock market ?pparently is the lafcgest single factor re
sponsible for the large increase in the volume of check transactions shown.
Another factor of importance in swelling the volume of debits to individual ac
count is the increase in interest and dividend checks coincident with the close of
the month.
Total debits to bank account show a slight decline for the week. Eor
New York City an increase of only 12 millions in debits to bank account is shown
as against an increase of 456 millions in debits to individual account.
For
Chicago an increase of 26*5millions in debits to individual account is shown
alongside of a decrease of 23 >2 millions in debits to bank account.
The statement closes with a recapitulation giving comparative figures by re
serve districts for 150 centers reporting complete data for both weeks. Figures
of reporting clearing houses by Federal Reserve districts are as follows;
