BANK DEBITS.

Volume of business for the week ending May 17 was $ 8 ,9 1 2 ,0 0 0 ,0 0 0 , marking an
increase of $ 132 , 000,000 over the total of $8 ,7 7 4 ,0 0 0 ,0 0 0 reported for the preced­
ing week. Larger figures are reported for a ll the leading centers, except New York,
where the volume of business shows a reduction of $ 13 1 , 000,000 in spite of consid­
erable activity on the stock exchange.
As compared with the week ending May IS , 1921, the volume of business for^the
report week was larger by $2 0 1,00 0 ,0 0 0, or about 2 per cent, compared with an in­
crease of about 17 per cent shown the week before.
For New York City alone an in­
crease over last year's figures of $3 2 0,00 0 ,0 0 0, or 7 per cent, is shown. Los Ange­
les reports an increase of $1+0,000,000, or of over 40 per cent. Boston shows the
largest decrease for the week, v i z . , by $44,000,000#
Considerable decreases, as
compared with 1921, are also shown for Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Detroit and San Fran­
cisco.
The volume of business is measured by debits to individual accounts reported to
the Federal Reserve Board for banks in clearing house centers.
The number of centers
reporting this week is 243, of which 164 are included in the summary by Federal re­
serve districts.
