PRESS STATEMENT
May 17, 1919*
Below is given the Federal Reserve Board's regular weekly statement of total
debits to deposit account, reported through the Federal Reserve banks by about 150
of the country’ s more important clearing houses. Transactions cover the weekly
periods ending Wednesday May 7 and May l4, 1919 .
Aggregate debits to individual account for the week were about 6 per cent
larger than for the immediately preceding week and the largest for any week since
January 22 of the present year. This large weekly total may be due in part to
payments received by the banksfrcm the public on account of subscriptions to the
Victory loan, in part also to heavy withdrawals of government deposits from
depositary institutions. It is but 'proper to add that the increase shown for the
New York banks alone is in excess of the total increase shown, foost of the
districts and larger cities reporting smaller total debits to individual account
than for the week ending May 7 * Debits to bank account show a decline of nearly
100 millions for the week, the New York City "
and district totals, among
others, being below corresponding totals for the immediately preceding week.
The statement closes with a recapitulation giving comparative figures by
reserve districts for 134 centers reporting co&piete data for both weeks. Figures
for reporting clearing houses by Federal Reserve districts are as follows:
