STATEMENT FOR THE PBESS

st. 2927 .

Released for publication
Sunday morning, July 30;
not earlier.

Federal Reserve Board,
July 29, 1922.
BANK DEBITS.

Volume of business for the week ending July 26 was $8,228,000,000, narking a
decrease of $427,000,000, or about 5 P3r cent, from the total of $8,655*000,000 re
ported for the preceding week* This decline is in accordance with the customary
recession after the mid-month week. All the leading centers reported smaller fig
ures, except Boston, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Milwaukee, the most pronounced decline,
amounting to $88,000,000, or 22 per cent, being reported for Philadelphia.
As compared with the week ending July 27, 1921, the volume of business for the
week under review shows an increase of $1,343,000,000, or about 19 per cent, larger
figures being shown for all the leading centers, except Baltimore, Kansas City and
San Francisco. The increase for New York City alone amounted to $972,000,000 or
nearly three-fourths of the total increase for all reporting centers,
The volume of business is measured by debits to individual accounts reported to
the Federal Reserve Board for banks in leading centers. The total number of centers
reporting this week is 244, of which 163 are included in the summary by Federal re
serve districts,
