V.

Aggregate debits to individual account, as reported for banks in 155
of the country's leading clearing house centers for the week ending January
19 , were 9>202 millions, marking an increase of 516 millions over the total
of 8,686 millions shown for the preceding week. For Few York City alone
the volume of debits is shown about 500 millions larger than the week before,
while increases in some of the other centers, notably Boston, Chicago, Detroit
and St. Louis, are largely offset by decreases reported for Cleveland, Los
Angeles and other, smaller cities.
As Compared with the corresponding week a year earlier, debits for the
week, under review are smaller by 1,242 millions, or about 12 per cent, reduced totals being shown for all the leading centers, except Cleveland,
Pittsburgh, and'Los Angeles.
