(Released for publication
Sunday morning, Dec. 5;

St.lOlS,
Federal Reserve JBoafrd
December 4, 1920.

BANK DEBITS
Aggregate debits to individual account, as reported by 156 of the
country's leading clearing ’nciu.se centers for the week ending December 1,
were 8,31*+ millions, or an average of 1,663 millions for each of the five
business days included in the week, compared with a total of 9)155 raillions, or a daily average of 1,526 millions, reported for the week before.
The larger volume of daily transactions for the most recent week -is
apparently due mainly to first-of-month payments, for even in New York
City, where the aggregate volume of stock exchange transactions was only
about half as large as the week before, an increase in daily average
debits from 789 to 22*+ ffiillior.s is noted.
As compared with the corresponding week in 1919» which also was a
five-day week, debits for the week under review are 1,241 millions smaller,
all the important centers, except Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco
and Los Angeles, reporting reduced totals.
