5TATm m ■ FOR THE PRESS. .st . 5*1-5 . Beleased- for publication Sunday morning, August 17, 191$; not earlier. Federal Reserve Board August lo, 1919' ■BAI'TK DEBITS. Below is given the Federal Reserve Board’ s weekly statement of debits to deposit account,'-reported .through the Federal Reserve banks by over I .50 of the country's more important clearing houses. Transactions cover the weekly periods ending Wed nesday, August .b and 13 of the..present .year f and in case of some of the reporting Centers .for. tiie.first time also the weekly period ending a year earlier, i. eAugust 1 5 , ISIS. .. .. _.. _ .. ______ . . It has been decided to omit from the weekly statement figures showing debits to bank account and to limit the comparisons to weekly totals of debits to individual account. While the former figures are of value as indicating changes in the volume of interbank transactions, it is thought that a picture of the relative volume of comrercial transactions handled through the banks of the ccuntry is adequately re flected in the figures 'of debits to individual account. Comparison of figures of debits to bank account as reported by different centers also brought out the fact that the methods of handling items varied in the various sections, and moreover tnat a large amount of duplication and reduplication inevitably resulted whenever a check or draft on its ivay to the payor or drawee bank was handled by one or more inter mediary institutionsAllowance should be made for the fact that the figures for the week ending August 15 ox last year, being the earliest reported to the Board, are probably in complete for the.reason that they.do not include returns from all the members of tne clearing house associations in the respective cities'__________ Debits to individual account....
