BANK DEBITS

Debits to individual accounts as reported by banks in leading cities for the
week ending August 6 , aggregated $10,120,000,000 or 8.5 per cent above the total of
$9,327*000,000 reported for the preceding week. Increases are shown for all of the
more important centers. New York City reports an increase of $389,000,000, Boston an increase of $63,000,000, Chicago - an increase of $54,000,000, and San Francisco *
an increase of $ 20,000,000.
As compared with*-the week ending August 8 , 1923, debits for the week under re­
view show an increase of $1,857,000,000 or 22,5 per cent. Most of the larger centers
report increases over last year's figures. Increases of $1,436,000,000 are reported
for Ifew York City, $97,000,000 - for Boston, $84,000,000 - for Chicago, and
$58,00 0,000 - for Philadelphia* Cleveland reports a reduction of $18,000,000.
Aggregate debits for l4l centers for which figures have been published weekly
since January, 1919 , were about $9,577,000,000 as compared with $8 ,828,259,000 for
the preceding week arid $7,764,878,000 for the week ending August 8 , 1923*
Debits to individual accounts were reported to the Federal Reserve Board for
banks in 252 centers, of which 240 are included in the summary by ftederal reserve
districts.
