CAPACITY UTILIZATION: MANUFACTURING AND MATERIALS
July 1982
The manufacturing operating rate decreased 0.2 percentage point
in July to 69.5 percent of capacity and the rate for industrial materials
production edged down 0.1 percentage point to 6-8.8 percent. These were
smaller declines than in recent months. The materials rate in July was
below its March 1975 low of 69,4 percent of capacity, while the manufacturing
rate remained slightly above its low of 69*0 percent in March 1975.
Within manufacturing, the utilization rate for the advanced processing
industries decreased 0.2 percentage point in July to 71.6 percent, and the
rate for primary processing industries decreased 0.1 percentage point to
65.6 percent. The operating rate for producers of nonelectrical machinery
dropped substantially, while rates for several industries declined more
moderately. Utilization rates rose for producers of motor vehicles and
parts, and petroleum products.
Producers of durable goods materials utilized 63.5 percent of
their capacity in July, down 0.4 percentage point from June as operating
rates continued to decline for metal mining and for the production of parts
for equipment. The utilization rate for nondurable goods materials production
decreased 0.1 percentage point to 71.6 percent in July, while the rate for
energy materials production rose, 0.6 percentage point to 80.1 percent.
