COMMERCIAL AMD INDUSTRIAL LOANS OUTSTANDING BY INDUSTRY

Commercial and industrial loans increased in seven districts and a net
of $221 million at weekly reporting member banks during the week ended September )0.
The principal net increases were $123 million in loans to transportation,
communication, and other public utilities, $4l million each to manufacturers of
» food, liquor, and tobacco products and to retail trade, $37 million to manufacturers
of machinery, and $26 million to petroleum refiners.
The .largest offsetting net decrease was $19 million in loans to the
mining industry, which includes producers of petroleum and natural gas.
The outstanding loans and changes during the week and since mid-year are
shown below; fourth column shows the changes during the comparable period last
year.
