COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL LOANS OUTSTANDING BY INDUSTRY

Commercial and industrial loans increased $544 million at weekly
reporting large commercial banks during the week ended November 5.
The principal net increases were $111 million in loans to retail trade,
$94 million to manufacturers of chemical and rubber products, $74 million to
commodity dealers, and $378 million to unclassified borrowers.
The larger offsetting net decreases were $50 million each in loans
to manufacturers of transportation equipment, and to the construction industry,
and $47 million to communication.

COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL TERM LOANS OUTSTANDING BY INDUSTRY

Total business term loans were $31,234 million as of October. This was
an increase of $2,914 million over the comparable data a year ago and a decrease of
$164 million from the last Wednesday in September.
The principal changes in term loans during October were decreases of
*$195 million in loans to petroleum refiners, and $51 million to "other" public utilities;
and increases of $91 million to "all other" loans, and $60 million to manufacturers of
transportation equipment.

The total of all business term loans on October 29, represented approximately
47 per cent of total of business loans out l a n d i n g at large commercial banks reporting
in the series.
