CHANGES IN COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL LOANS BY INDUSTRY
The n e t decrease in commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans a t weekly r e p o r t i n g
member banks during the week ended May 27 amounted t o $l6 m i l l i o n . The p r i n c i p a l
n e t decreases were $27 m i l l i o n i n loans t o s a l e s finance companies, $25 m i l l i o n to
manufacturers of food, l i q u o r , and tobacco products, $24 m i l l i o n t o commodity
d e a l e r s , and $22 m i l l i o n t o manufacturers and producers of petroleum, c o a l ,
chemicals, and rubber p r o d u c t s .
O f f s e t t i n g n e t increases were $38 m i l l i o n in loans t o public u t i l i t i e s ,
$30 m i l l i o n t o manufacturers of metals and metal products, and $24 m i l l i o n to
"other" types of business concerns.
Changes i n loans during the week and since year-end are shown below; the
t h i r d column shows the changes during the comparable p e r i o d l a s t y e a r .
