COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL LOANS OUTSTANDING BY INDUSTRY

Commercial and industrial loans decreased a net of $522 million at
weekly reporting large commercial banks during the week ended January 5.
The principal net decreases were $139 million in loans to manufacturers
of machinery, and $81 million to manufacturers of textiles, apparel, and leather
products.
The larger offsetting net increases were $97 million in loans to
communications, and $102 million to unclassified borrowers.

COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL TERM LOANS OUTSTANDING BY INDUSTRY

H. 12b

Total business term loans were $31,975 million as of December. This was
a decrease of $578 million over the comparable data a year ago and an increase of
$42 million from the Wednesday in November.
The principal net changes were $110 million in loans to manufacturers of
machinery, $87 million to manufacturers of chemicals and rubber products, and $120
million to foreign commercial and industrial loans.
The total of all business term loans on December 29 represented approximately
47 percent of business loans outstanding at large commercial banks reporting in the
series.
