BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM February 3, 1958 G.2Q r / SALES FINANCE COMPANIES December 1957 Sales finance company holdings of retail passenger car instalment paper decreased $40 million in December 1957 to an estimated $7,470 million at the end of the month. This compares with a decrease of $22 million in December 195& and an increase of $69 million in December 1955• Total consumer instalment credit at sales finance companies increased $9 million during December to $9,573 million. The total increase during 1957 W S $#73 million, as compared with an increase of $657 million during 1956• Retail credit extended on passenger automobiles Increased $29 million from November, reflecting increases in extensions of both new and used car paper. In December about 145 thousand new and 173 thousand used passenger cars were financed at retail. Wholesale automotive paper outstanding increased $273 million to an estimated $1,569 million. All other types of business credit declined slightly.
