Consumer i n s t a l m e n t c r e d i t h e l d by commercial banks
amounted to $11,177 m i l l i o n d o l l a r s a t the end of J u l y , $81
m i l l i o n more t h a n a month e a r l i e r . The monthly expansion r e f l e c t e d i n c r e a s e s i n a l l t y p e s of c r e d i t , with automobile
c r e d i t accounting f o r about o n e - h a l f of t h e r i s e . T o t a l . b a l ances a t t h e end of t h e month were 16 p e r c e n t l a r g e r t h a n
i n J u l y 1955.
The volume of c r e d i t extended i n J u l y was somewhat
l e s s t h a n i n June, as i s u s u a l a t t h i s time of y e a r , b u t e x ceeded t h e year-ago l e v e l .
