Extensions of" consumer instalment loans at commercial banks in September
were $792 million below the August volume. The decline in lending during the month
was general although all types of credit extended were above the September 1971 level.
Instalment.credit outstanding at the end of September amounted to

$57,566 million, an increase of $720 million from August 31. A l l major types of credit
expanded during the month, in every Federal Reserve District.
