CONSUMER INSTALMENT CREDIT A T COMMERCIAL BANKS
M A R C H 1971

Consumer instalment credit outstanding at commercial banks increased
$117 million in March with the expansion concentrated largely in direct automobile loans
and personal loans. All major types of instalment indebtedness except purchased automobile paper shared in the $1,607 million increase over March 31, 1970.
The volume of instalment credit extended in March was considerably larger
than in the preceding month and well above the volume of March last year.
Increases
were recorded for all major types of credit and in all sections of the country.
