CONSUMER INSTALMENT'CREDIT AT COMMERCIAL BANKS
JANUARY 1966
Consumer Instalment c r e d i t h e l d by commercial banks was up $30
m i l l i o n i n January. Though moderate gains were r e g i s t e r e d in a l l types
of c r e d i t except home r e p a i r and modernization l o a n s , t h i s was t h e s m a l l e s t
t o t a l monthly i n c r e a s e i n more than a y e a r . At t h e end of January t h e
amount outstanding t o t a l e d $28,044 m i l l i o n , $3,953 m i l l i o n more than on
January 31, 1965.
The volume of c r e d i t extended declined s h a r p l y i n January as i s , ,
customary a t t h i s time of t h e y e a r . C r e d i t volume f o r automobiles and
s
p e r s o n a l loans was l a r g e r than i n the corresponding 1965 month, but t h a t
f o r o t h e r consumer goods and home r e p a i r s f e l l s l i g h t l y below year-ago t o t a l s .
