The reduction occurred mainly in automobile credit but all types of credit shared in the $3,139 million increase over January 31 last y e a r . Instalment credit extended in January, which customarily falls below the December volume, declined $551 million and fell somewhat below January 1969. Most of the year-to-year decline occurred in the automobile sector and accompanied a drop in new car sales.
