NOVEMBER 1971 Consumer instalment credit outstanding at commercial banks at the end of November amounted to nearly $45.4 billion, an increase of $449 million from the amount owed a month earlier. All major types of credit rose during November with more than one-half of the total increase occurring in automobile paper. The volume of instalment credit extended by banks rose moderately from October to November and was substantially greater than a year earlier when extensions of auto credit were reduced by work stoppages in the industry.
