Consumer instalment c r e d i t outstanding a t commercial banks increased
about'2 per cent i n July t o an estimated 8,7-UU t r i l l i o n d o l l a r s a t the month-end.
_ Each type of c r e d i t continued to i n c r e a s e , with the l a r g e s t gain i n purchased
automobile p a c e r . The t o t a l amount outstanding was 31 ner cent above the same
date in^l952."

The volume of c r e d i t extended during J u l y , however, declined 2 per
c e n t , as a r e s u l t of decreases i n a l l c a t e g o r i e s except automobile paper p u r uhased.from d e a l e r s . Total volume was up 1 per cent from a year ago.
