FEDERAL RESERVE BANK Ur RICHMOND Instalment -accounts receivable increased U per- cent in August, when little change .is usual, and continued considerably above the year-ago level. C o l l e c t i o n s on instalment accounts showed a small indreasey-but the r a t i o of c o l l e c t i o n s t o instalment aticdunts outstanding on August 1 was unchanged a t 23 per i c e n t . The average c o l l e c t i o n period f o r instalment accounts outstanding "in August was nearly e i g h t months; a year ago i t wad about s i x months. Charge accounts r e c e i v a b l e declined s l i g h t l y i n August, b u t were w e l l above the amount outstanding a year e a r l i e r . Collections on charge accounts were down s u b s t a n t i a l l y , as i s customary i n t h i s month, and represented 5 l per cent of accounts outstanding on the f i r s t of the month. These accounts -continued to be l i q u i d a t e d , on the average> i n about $9 days. Cash, sales of department stores rose 5'per cent in August, and • remained near the year-ago l e v e l . This type of s a l e c o n s t i t u t e d 5 2 per cent > of the t o t a l i n August* a drop of two percentage p o i n t s from -July. • Both" instalment and charge-account s a l e s showed about t h e customary expansion from July to August. Compared vdth l a s t y e a r ' s volume, instalment s a l e s were 1*6 per cent l a r g e r , and charge-account sales', 13 per cent,....
