a t the end of the month were s l i g h t l y l a r g e r than i n the same month l a s t
y e a r . The c o l l e c t i o n r a t i o f o r charge accounts i n c r e a s e d 1 p o i n t i n
January to lt6 per c e n t , which compares with-h3 per cent i n January 1956.
Both cash and c r e d i t t r a n s a c t i o n s a t r e p o r t i n g department s t o r e s
were down s h a r p l y from the December l e v e l s . Each type of s a l e , however,
was i n l a r g e r volume than i n the corresponding month a year ago.
