During, t h e p a s t few y e a r s , n a t i o n a l s t a t i s t i c a l a g e n c i e s
i n c o n s u l t a t i o n w i t h r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s from r e t a i l i n g have been working t o improve t h e s t a t i s t i c s on r e t a i l t r a d e . The Bureau df t h e
Census, which has g e n e r a l r e s p o n s i b i l i t y , f o r t h e r e t a i l t r a d e
s t a t i s t i c s programs, of t h e F e d e r a l Government, i s broadening i t s
a c t i v i t i e s i n t h i s f i e l d and, a t t h e same' time, 1 t h e F e d e r a l Reserve .
i s t r a n s f e r r i n g a p p r o p r i a t e p a r t s of i t s r e t a i l t r a d e d a t a c o l l e c t i o n program t o t h a t agency.
At p r e s e n t t h e Bureau of t h e Census, p u b l i s h e s n a t i o n a l
s t a t i s t i c s f o r end-of-month i n s t a l m e n t and charge accounts r e c e i v a b l e .
These aire shown i n t h e Census B u r e a u ' s "Monthly R e t a i l . T r a d e R e p o r t , "
which i n c l u d e s s e p a r a t e f i g u r e s f o r department s t o r e s . However, t h e "
sample d e s i g n used by Census t o .develop t h e e s t i m a t e s of accounts r e c e i v a b l e w i l l produce d a t a o n l y . f o r t h e United S t a t e s as a whole, so
t h a t s t a t i s t i c s f o r i n d i v i d u a l a r e a s w i l l n o t be a v a i l a b l e from Census.
B a s i c d a t a from t h e Census r e t a i l c o l l e c t i o n program w i l l
be u t i l i z e d by t h e ^Federal Reserve Board i n p r e p a r i n g i t s r e g u l a r
monthly e s t i m a t e s of consumer c r e d i t s t a t i s t i c s *

remained unchanged i n J a n u a r y i n l i n e w i t h s e a s o n a l e x p e c t a t i o n s , and
were about o n e - t e n t h above t h e amount o u t s t a n d i n g a y e a r e a r l i e r . The "
r a t e of c o l l e c t i o n on t h e s e a c c o u n t s , w a s a p p r o x i m a t e l y t h e same as i n
December b u t was s l i g h t l y above t h e y e a r - a g o . r a t e .

c o n t i n u e d s u b s t a n t i a l l y ahead of t h e y e a r - a g o l e v e l . C o l l e c t i o n s on f i r s t s

somewhat from a y e a r ago as w e l l .

Howe v e r , s a l e s of a l l t y p e s r e m a i n e d ' h i g h e r t h a n t h e comparable p e r i o d l a s t year with instalment sales r e g i s t e r i n g the largest,.year-to-year gain,
8 per cent.
