I n s t a l m e n t accounts outstanding- a t department s t o r e s
d e c l i n e d s e a s o n a l l y i n A p r i l . Month-end b a l a n c e s were 1 per
cent below t h o s e of t h e previous month-:and 5 per cent below a
year ago. C o l l e c t i o n s on i n s t a l m e n t accounts were down 10 per
cent during the month, and t h e r a t i o of c o l l e c t i o n s to' accounts
r e c e i v a b l e dropped 2 p o i n t s t o 18 per c e n t , t h e same as f o r .
A p r i l of l a s t y e a r . At t h e c u r r e n t r a t e of r e p a y m e n t , . t h e s e
accounts would be l i q u i d a t e d i n about 10 months.
Charge-accounts outstanding, i n c r e a s e d i n . A p r i l ,
r e f l e c t i n g i n p a r t E a s t e r buying during t h e month. At t h e end
of the month t h e y were 3 per c e n t above t h e l e v e l of t h e p r e ceding month and h per cent above a year ago.. C o l l e c t i o n s on
charge accounts dropped 8 per cer^t, and t h e c o l l e c t i o n r a t i o of
l±6 per cent was 2 p o i n t s below t h a t of-1 larch ;and 1 p o i n t below
t h e r a t i o a year ago. The average repayment p e r i o d i n A p r i l
was about 65 days.
Cash and charge-account s a l e s i n c r e a s e d 8 per cent
and 11 per c e n t , r e s p e c t i v e l y , b u t i n s t a l m e n t s a l e s were down .
