DEPARTMENT STORE 'CREDIT- - KAY 1951;

-

Instalment accounts outstanding at department stores
were reduced slightly during May, but they continued above a
year ago. Balances at the end of the month were 1 per cent
below the preceding month-end, but.were 61 per cent'above a year
earlier. Instalment collections during May amounted to lh per
cent of balances outstanding at the first of the month, the same
as a month ago and a year ago. •

Charge accounts outstanding decreased 1 per cent during
May, but at the end of the month were 5 per cent above-a year ago.
'ihe charge-account collection ratio, .estimated at 1 6 per cent, was

1 point above April and the same as May of last year.
All types of sales decreased from April to May—cash
sales by 6 per cent, charge-account sales by 8 per.cent, and in-,
stalment sales by 3 per cent. Sales of each type were approximately 5 per cent below a year ago.
