DEPARTMENT STORE' CREDIT - JUNE 1952

Instalment accounts outstanding at department stores continued •
to show little'change during June.. • Balances-at the end .of the month
were up 1 per cent from Hay and it per: cent from - a year-ago.. Collections
on instalment accounts were dovm;from both a month ago and a year ago,
and amounted to 18 per cent of balances outstanding at the beginning of
the month,
- Charge-accounts outstanding decreased 2 per cent during June,
but at the month-end ivzere k per cent above the level of a year ago.
Collections decreased slightly from May to June, and were unchanged
from a year ago. The ratio of charge-account collections to first-ofmonth accounts receivable was L.6 per cent, dovm 2 points from the preceding month. The average repayment period in June was about 65 daysV
Sales of all types in June were moderately below those of Hay.
Cash sales decreased 8 per cent, while instalment and charge-account
sales dropped 7 per cent. Instalment sales were sharply above June of
last year, but cash and charge-account sales were below the level of a •
year ago.
