Instalment accounts of f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s , which are u s u a l l y
reduced i n the e a r l y Lontho of the year, showed a d e c l i n e of 3 per
cent a t r e p o r t i n g 3 to re c i n March end continued below the corresponding period of I960. A c o l l e c t i o n r a t i o of 12 per cent has
been maintained throughout the f i r s t q u a r t e r of t h i s year, unchanged
f r o n the p r e v a i l i n g r a t e o f u year e a r l i e r . Charge accounts r e ceivable also declined moderately in March.
T o t a l s a l e s of r e p o r t i n g f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s showed s u b s t a n t i a l
gains in March, r e f l e c t i n g mere than the usual seasonal increase i n
both cash and instalment volume. A l e s s marked expansion occurred
in charge account t r a n s a c t i o n s . S a l e s of a l l types were below those
in the corresponding month of 1960, but f o r the f i r s t q u a r t e r . c a s h
s a l e s were s l i g h t l y higher than a year ago.
