BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM G.16 June 7, 1955 RETAIL FURNITURE REPORT FOR APRIL 1955 Instalment accounts outstanding a t f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s remained p r a c t i c a l l y unchanged during A p r i l . Balances a t the end of the month were 1 per cent below t h e March l e v e l , but 1 per cent above a year ago. C o l l e c t i o n s during the month amounted t o an estimated 12 per cent of f i r s t - o f - m o n t h balances, 1 point below the March c o l l e c t i o n r a t i o and the same as A p r i l of l a s t y e a r , S a l e s of r e p o r t i n g f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s increased 2 per cent from March t o A p r i l , r e f l e c t i n g an i n c r e a s e of 5 per cent i n i n s t a l ment s a l e s . Charge-account s a l e s were unchanged while cash s a l e s were down 2 per c e n t . S a l e s of each type continued above a year ago. The f i r s t f o u r months of t h i s year compared with the c o r r e s ponding period of l a s t year show i n c r e a s e s of 5 per cent f o r cash s a l e s , 8 per cent f o r instalment s a l e s , and 10 per cent f o r charge-account s a l e s . The r e t a i l value of f u r n i t u r e s t o r e i n v e n t o r i e s increased 3 per cent during A p r i l , but a t t h e month end was 1 per cent below a year e a r l i e r . At t h e A p r i l r a t e of s a l e s , stocks on hand amounted t o about a 5 months* supply.
