RETAIL FURNITURE REPORT FOR MAY 1 9 #

Instalment accounts outstanding a t f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s were unchanged during Kay, but a t the end of the month were 5 per cent above
a year e a r l i e r . The instalment c o l l e c t i o n r a t i o , estimated a t 12 per
c e n t , was the same as both a month ago and a year ago.
Sales of a l l types increased from April to May, when some
r i s e i s u s u a l . Instalment and charge-account s a l e s were up 12 per cent
and cash s a l e s were up lit per c e n t . Sales continued strove a year ago,
and i n the f i r s t f i v e months of t h i s year t o t a l e d h per cent more than
i n the corresponding period of l a s t y e a r . This r e f l e c t e d gains of h
per cent i n instalment s a l e s , 7 per cent i n charge-account s a l e s , and
2 per cent i n cash s a l e s .
The r e t a i l value of f u r n i t u r e s t o r e i n v e n t o r i e s decreased 2
per cent during May, but a t the month-end was 5 per cent above a year
ago. Stocks on hand amounted to about a U months' supply a t the May
r a t e of s a l e s .
