RETAIL/FURNITURE REPORT FOR DECEMBER 1963

Instalment accounts r e c e i v a b l e a t r e p o r t i n g f u r n i t u t e s t o r e s
showed the customary year-end i n c r e a s e and, as i n the preceding s i x
months, were s l i g h t l y l a r g e r than i n the corresponding 1962 period. A
seasonal slackening i n c o l l e c t i o n s brought the r a t i o t o f i r s t - o f - m o n t h
r e c e i v a b l e s down one percentage p o i n t , t o about the same r a t e as a
year e a r l i e r .
Charge account balances, which also u s u a l l y increase i n
December, were up eight per cent during the month but showed l i t t l e change
over December 1962, when an upswing of 6 per cent was recorded.
The December s p u r t i n s a l e s was the l a r g e s t in several y e a r s .
The gain was p a r t i c u l a r l y marked i n cash s a l e s , which had slackened during
November, but s u b s t a n t i a l increases occurred a l s o i n c r e d i t business.
Sales of a l l types were l a r g e r than i n December 1962. For the year 1963 as
a whole, however, instalment s a l e s were off somewhat, r e f l e c t i n g a
comparatively low f i r s t h a l f .
