RETAIL FUR1IITURE REPORT FOR OCTOBER 1963
Instalment accounts r e c e i v a b l e of r e p o r t i n g f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s
increased one per cent in October and continued s l i g h t l y above the amounts
outstanding a year e a r l i e r . Collections shoved the customary seasonal spurt
to 12 per cent of f i r s t - o f - m o n t h outstandings in October, approximately the
same r a t i o as i n the corresponding month l a s t year.
Both cash and c r e d i t s a l e s of f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s showed the l a r g e s t
expansion from September recorded i n several y e a r s . All types of s a l e s
were considerably above October 1962 as v e i l , with cash and charge-account
t r a n s a c t i o n s shoving l a r g e r y e a r - t o - y e a r gains than instalment business.
Sales f o r the f i r s t ten months of the year have not been markedly
d i f f e r e n t i n t o t a l volume from the 1962 period. Cash s a l e s a r e 6 per cent
l a r g e r t h i s year but both types of c r e d i t s a l e s are about the same as i n
January-October 1962.
