BOARD OF GCV2RKCR3 OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEI: G.16 August 3, 1955 RETAIL PURPETURE REPORT PGR JUNE 1955 Instalment accounts outstanding a t f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s increased s l i g h t l y during June. Balances a t the end of t h e month 7rere 1 per cent above the preceding month and ii per cent above a year ago. C o l l e c t i o n s during the month amounted t o an estimated 12 per cent of f i r s t - o f - m o n t h balances outstanding, the same as both a month ago and a year ago. Sales of r e p o r t i n g f u r n i t u r e s t o r e s decreased s l i g h t l y i n June, r e f l e c t i n g d e c l i n e s of 1 per cent i n instalment and cash , s a l e s . Charge-account s a l e s vrere up 3 per c e n t . Sales of a l l t y p e s , however, were moderately above a year a g o . During the f i r s t half of 1 9 % s a l e s have been above t h e corresponding period of 195U — instalment s a l e s by 10 per c e n t , charge-account s a l e s by 12 per c e n t , and cash s a l e s by 6 per c e n t . The r e t a i l value of f u r n i t u r e s t o r e i n v e n t o r i e s declined 3 per cent during June, but a t the end of t h e month ~ias 2 per cent above a year ago. At t h e June r a t a of s a l e s , stocks on hand amounted t o about a U months' supply.
