RETAIL FURNITURE REPORT FOR JUNE 1951

Sales a t furniture stores, "which customarily decline in June,
-..•ere li per cent less than i n May. Declines were' reported f o r each
type o.f transaction, but cash and instalment sales f e l l only s l i g h t l y
below the preceding nonttib' volume. Compared with a year ago t o t a l *
sales were down it per cent, r e f l e c t i n g a decline in instalment sales,
v.liich account f o r a substantial share of the t o t a l .
Instalment accounts receivable continued to decline, and
showed a 5 per cent drop from a year e a r l i e r . Collections on i n s t a l - ,
r.ent accounts were up 2 per cent i n June and, vihen related to accounts
outstanding on the f i r s t of the month, resulted in a collection r a t i o
of 11 per cent, the same as for May.
Inventories at f u r n i t u r e stores were reduced 5 per cent
during the month, but continued about one-third larger than those
carried a year e a r l i e r . Stocks on hand on June 30 represented about
o months' supply at the current r a t e of sale as- compared with about
4 months' supply a. year e a r l i e r .
