COM M EM ORATIVE 50-CEN T PIECES

The Act of Congress approved August 7, 1946, authorizing the coinage of 50-cent pieces to commem­
orate the life and perpetuate the ideals and teachings of Booker T. W ashington has been amended effective
Septem ber 21, 1951, to authorize the coinage of 50-cent pieces to commemorate the lives and perpetuate
the ideals and teachings of Booker T. Washington and George W ashington Carver. We have been informed
th a t pursuant to the Act, as so amended, Booker T. W ashington Birthplace Memorial, Booker W ashington
Birthplace, Virginia, and George W ashington Carver National M onument Foundation, Diamond, Missouri
have designated all banks and tru st companies (other than Federal Reserve Banks) in the continental
United S tates to dispose of these coins to the public at a premium of SI.50, i.e., a t $2.00 per coin. They
have also authorized and requested the United States M int a t Philadelphia to issue such coins a t face
value to the Federal Reserve Banks, and through them to other banks and tru st companies in the United
States, upon their order, for sale to the public a t such premium. The Act, as am ended, provides th a t all
proceeds from the sale of the coins “shall be used, in the manner decided upon by the Booker T. Washing­
ton Birthplace Memorial and the George Washington Carver National M onument Foundation to oppose
the spread of communism among Negroes in the interest of the national defense.”
We are prepared to supply these commemorative coins in lots of 50 coins (§25), or any multiple
thereof, to banks and tru st companies in this district upon receipt of their orders and paym ent for the
coins at face value. Orders for the coins should not be sent by any bank or tru st com pany direct to a United
S tates M int. Any single order for 2,000 coins (SI,000) or any multiple thereof, may be forwarded by us,
or by our Little Rock, Louisville and Memphis Branches to the Philadelphia M int for direct shipm ent to
the ordering bank or tru st company. All orders for less than 50 coins accompanied by paym ent should be
addressed to The Peoples National Bank, Rocky M ount, Virginia, which is acting as depositary for the
Booker T. W ashington Birthplace Memorial and the George W ashington Carver National M onument
Foundation. Orders fo r less than 50 coins should not be sent to the Federal Reserve B ank of St. Louis or its
L ittle Rock, Louisville and M em phis Branches.

On all of the coin shipments, except those made by the M int, the transportation charges will be pre­
paid. On all of the shipm ents made by the M int the transportation charges will be “collect” and it is under­
stood th a t th e Booker T. W ashington Birthplace Memorial acting in its own behalf and in behalf of the
George W ashington Carver N ational M onument Foundation will make direct reimbursement to banks
and tru st companies upon receipt of advice of the am ount of shipping charges paid.
An advice stating the premium at which the coins are to be sold and the method for rem itting for such
premium will be enclosed with each shipment made by us and our Little Rock, Louisville and Memphis
Branches. A copy of the advice will be mailed, under separate cover, to the ordering bank or trust com­
pany, and a copy will also be sent to the Booker T. W ashington Birthplace Memorial for its records and
those of the George W ashington Carver National M onument Foundation. It is contem plated th a t re­
m ittance for the premium a t which the coins are sold will be made on the first of each m onth by check to
the order of The Peoples N ational Bank, Rocky M ount, Virginia, for account of the Booker T . W ashington
Birthplace Memorial and George W ashington Carver National M onument Foundation.
