The Homeownership Rate over the Past Decade
January 09, 2017

The housing bust and the accompanying Great Recession (2007-09) led to a sharp decline in the rate of
homeownership. While the economy has since recovered, the homeownership rate hasn’t rebounded.
In this clip taken from a recent St. Louis Fed Dialogue with the Fed presentation, William Emmons takes a look
at the trajectory of the homeownership rate since 2005. Emmons is an assistant vice president and economist at
the St. Louis Fed and the senior economic adviser at the St. Louis Fed’s Center for Household Financial
Stability.
