SOURCES OF PERSONAL INCOME
Personal income rose $13.2 billion (annual rate) in June, following a rise of $17.5 billion in May. The increases
were affected by three special factors: a large increase in retroactive social security benefit payments in May,
changes in subsidy payments to farmers in May and June, and an initial payment to a newly established
retirement savings fund for Federal Government employees in April. Excluding these special factors, personal
income increased $19.5 billion in June and $26.2 billion in May. (Series revised.)

Data are prorated averages of Wednesday figures for domestically chartered banks and averages
of month-end data for foreign-related institutions. Data beginning January 1984 are not strictlv
comparable with data for earlier periods, largely because beginning January 1984 certain obligations
of States and political subdivisions are included in loans rather than in other securities.
