SOURCES OF PERSONAL INCOME
Persona! income rose $28.6 billion (annual rate) in December, following a decline of $17.8 billion in November.
The December and November figures were affected by two special factors—subsidy payments to farmers, which
affected changes in both months, and a retroactive payment to Postal Service employees, which affected the
December change. Excluding these special factors, personal income increased $17.8 billion in December and $22.8
billion in November.

Data are prorated averages of Wednesday figures for domestically chartered banks and averages
of month-end date (or foreign-related institutions. Data beginning January 1984 are not strictly
comparable with data for earlier periods, largely because beginning January 1984 certain obligations
of States and political subdivisions are included in loans rather than in other securities.
