TRUNCATION OF TREASURY CHECKS

TO ALL MEMBER BANKS
AND OTHERS CONCERNED IN THE
ELEVENTH FEDERAL RESERVE DISTRICT:
In the first half of 1978, this District will implement a new means of
processing T r e a s u r y ch eck s . Under the new processing method, T r e a s u r y
checks will be truncated at the first Reserve Bank of dep osit, and microfilm im
ages and magnetic tape data will be fu rn ish ed the T r e a s u r y Department. This
should greatly expedite the processing cycle. To accommodate this new mode of
processin g, the symbol and serial num ber of each check will be p re-encoded in
addition to the already MICR encoded routing num ber. On some ch e c k s , an ad d i
tional one-digit transaction code will be MICR encoded in position 16; it is th e r e
fore important that this field not be used by y our institution.
A sample T re a s u ry check with the encoding referenced above is
printed on the following page.
Due to this new method of processing T r e a s u r y c h e c k s , the following
pro ced u re s must be followed when T r e a s u r y checks a r e submitted to a Reserve
office for payment:
1.

All T r e a s u r y checks deposited with a Federal Reserve Bank
must be amount encoded .

2.

All deposits submitted on or after December 15, 1977 must
be accompanied by a form MAIL-68, "Advice of Shipment."
A supply of these forms will be sent to banks c u r r e n t l y d e
positing Government checks with any Reserve office p rio r
to December 15, 1977.

3.

No more than 2,000 items should be sent with each MAIL-68.

4.

After May 1, 1978, depositing banks that have rehabilitation
capabilities a r e encouraged to rehabilitate items that reject
from their high speed check handling equipment. All fields
should be rehabilitated for p r o p e r p rocessin g.

Banks and others are encouraged to use the fo llo w in g incoming WATS numbers in contacting this Bank:
1-800-492-4403 (intrastate) and 1-800-527-4970 (interstate). For calls placed locally, please use 651 plus
