FEDERAL RESERVE BANK

May 22, 1929

SPECIMEN SET OF NEW SMALL-SIZE CURRENCY
To All Incorporated Banks and Trust Companies
in the Eleventh Federal Reserve District:
The Secretary of the Treasury has authorized the following statement:
“Because of the many requests received from the banking institutions of the
country for specimens of the new small-size currency in advance of its issue,
and in order to acquaint the public with the appearance of the new currency
before its payment into circulation, the Secretary of the Treasury has decided
to make available to the incorporated banks and trust companies throughout the
United States, solely for exhibition purposes, in advance of the public issue, sets
of the new currency, consisting of one piece each of the $1, $2, $5 and $10 de
nominations. The distribution of these exhibition sets will be made only by the
Federal reserve banks, and sets will be supplied only to those incorporated banks
and trust companies who desire to receive them strictly for exhibition purposes,
and upon their individual application therefor.
“The advance issue of limited amounts of the new currency now authorized
for exhibition purposes is in no sense a public issue. No change is now contem
plated in the time set for the initial issue of the new small-size currency to the
public, and plans are going forward for this first issue to be made in July next,
the exact date later to be announced.”
In connection with this statement, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and its
branches at El Paso, Houston and San Antonio will accept orders from the banks in their
respective territories for shipment on Saturday, June 1. Not more than one set will be
furnished any one bank.
Non-member banks desiring one of the sets of this advance issue should accompany
their orders with draft on a correspondent for $18.18, the 18 cents to cover postage, reg
istration and insurance costs. Member banks desiring a set should accompany their
orders with authority to charge their accounts $18, representing the value of the cur
rency, and, following our usual practice, the cost of transportation on such shipments
will be absorbed by us.
Your attention is called to the fact that these sets are for exhibition purposes only
and are not to be put into circulation until the date the new-size currency is released by
the Treasury Department for general circulation.
Yours very truly,

Governor
