C . 20210 C O N S U M E R PRICE INDEX FOR A U G U S T 1964 T h e C o n s u m e r P r i c e Indbex d e c r e a s e d by 0 . i percent in A u g u s t , the U n i t e d States D e p a r t m e n t of Labor's Bureau of Labor S t a t i s t i c s a n n o u n c e d t o d a y . Lower prices for fruits and v e g e t a b l e s w e r e largely r e s p o n s i b l e for the d e c l i n e , but prices of w o m e n ' s a p p a r e l and a u t o m o b i l e s also w e r e lower. C o s t s of h o m e o w n e r s h i p went u p . At 106t2 p e r c e n t of its 1957-59 a v e r a g e , the A u g u s t index was 1.0 percent higher than a year a g o . A11hougli m o s t c o n s u m e r goods and s e r v i c e s have a d v a n c e d in price since A u g u s t 1963, prices have declined for s e v e r a l food i t e m s , new c a r s , fuel o i l , and h o u s e h o l d d u r a b l e s . FOOD A drop in p r i c e s of fresh fruits and v e g e t a b l e s c a u s e d a 0.3 p e r c e n t d e c l i n e in food costs in A u g u s t . S e a s o n a l increases in s u p p l i e s b r o u g h t s h a r p l y lower prices for p o t a t o e s , g r a p e s , t o m a t o e s , green p e p p e r s , a p p l e s , and celery. The d e c l i n e in potato prices was the first s i n c e last N o v e m b e r . M e a t prices a d v a n c e d by 0.7 p e r c e n t , as further increases w e r e reported for n e a r l y a l l cuts of fresh beef and p o r k . D e m a n d for beef remained strong and prices of p o r k p r o d u c t s c o n t i n u e d to rise in response to r e d u c e d s u p p 1 i e s . Howe v e r , prices of m e a t s still a v e r a g e d m o d e r a t e l y lower than a year a g o . year a g o . a b o v e last items w e r e vegetables O n the w h o l e , food p r i c e s in A u g u s t w e r e up by 0.8 percent from a Prices of p o t a t o e s , even a f t e r the sharp A u g u s t d r o p , w e r e over 30 p e r c e n t y e a r , and c o f f e e was up a l m o s t 25 p e r c e n t . H o w e v e r , p r i c e s of s e v e r a l food b e l o w their levels of A u g u s t 1963, including sugar and some fresh fruits and in a d d i t i o n to m e a t s . HOUSING Housing costs rose 0 . 1 percent in A u g u s t b e c a u s e of h i g h e r costs for h o m e o w n e r s h i p a n d increases in rents and electric rates in some a r e a s . OTHER G R O U P S Prices of w o m e n ' s a p p a r e l d e c l i n e d , as a result of s e a s o n a l close- outs for summer w e a r and c l e a r a n c e s for h o s i e r y a n d l i n g e r i e . T r a n s p o r t a t i o n costs also w e r e lower, as d e c l i n e s in p r i c e s of new and u s e d cars m o r e than o f f s e t a rise in g a s o l i n e p r i c e s . M e d i c a l care costs rose a g a i n m o s t l y on the basis of further increases in d o c t o r s ' and d e n t i s t s ' f e e s . COST-OF-LIVING ADJUSTMENTS Full i n f o r m a t i o n is not a v a i l a b l e on c o s t - o f - l i v i n g e s c a l a t o r a d j u s t m e n t s that w i l l result from the A u g u s t i n d e x . Approximately 165,000 w o r k e r s a r e c o v e r e d by c o s t - o f - l i v i n g e s c a l a t o r c l a u s e s that p r o v i d e for a d j u s t m e n t s tied to the N a t i o n a l C o n s u m e r P r i c e Index for A u g u s t , b u t r e p o r t e d l y , d e c i s i o n s h a v e n o t yet b e e n reached at a n u m b e r of m a j o r c o m p a n i e s as to how these clauses w i l l b e i n t e r p r e t e d in v i e w of the fact that they a r e tied to the old index w h i c h is no longer p u b l i s h e d . S o m e 2,600 transit w o r k e r s w i l l receive a n i n c r e a s e of 3 cents a^ b a s e d on the q u a r t e r l y change in the index for W a s h i n g t o n , D . The old series :index, U.S. city a v e r a g e , was discontinued after June 1964. However, indexes :for several cities will be published on the old basis for a short time. :These are shown on Table C - l .
